Poem: The boatman’s blues
Translated by Salma Jilani
Urdu Poem by Khalid Mahmood
Once river was the boatman’s estate
Now dogs sleep on the river’s coffin
The boatman has exhausted
while wailing about the river
His back been bent with huge unseen lumber
There is no corner left of the river’s shroud
Where the boatman’s hunger hasn’t been recorded
On the dried body of the river
the boats lying still with thirst
On the sandy grounds there is no one to remember the boatman
Now the nightmares of broken rudders haunt him
There is no one to claim his legacy
On the river’s muddy bed hope has ceased to float
The boatman feels blues
